Your City Hall closed door deals are on the move
Howdy, Calgary. Cassidy Redcloud here, your Morning Wire correspondent, coming at you live from the MiTL Sports Desk. Got a quick hit from City Hall on a few things that kinda caught my eye from the March 10 Strategic Meeting of Council, especially when you start peeling back the layers on those 'confidential' votes.
For real though, there's some interesting movement down at City Hall, and it's less about new pipelines and more about closed-door discussions. On March 10, Council held a Strategic Meeting where several motions passed with amendments, including the adoption of Report C2026-0240. What's eyebrow-raising is the directive to keep "Confidential Attachment 2" held confidential. Both Councillor Jennifer Wyness and Councillor Landon Johnston voted on this motion, though Johnston voted no, according to the official council minutes.
### What's Under Wraps?
There were also motions to move into a closed meeting, pursuant to Section 29 (Advice from officials) of the Access to Information Act, with discussions held confidential. Councillor Dan McLean voted yes on both these motions. This isn't uncommon, of course, but it's always worth noting when City Hall is keeping things under wraps. It makes you wonder what kind of advice they're getting that needs to be so hush-hush. This is Calgary — we've seen the boom, we've seen the bust, and we showed up anyway. Transparency, or lack thereof, always hits a little different here.
* **March 10, 2026:** Strategic Meeting of Council where Report C2026-0240 was adopted after amendment.
* **Confidential Attachment 2:** Directed to be held confidential.
* **Closed Meeting:** Council moved into a closed session, with discussions held confidential per Section 29 of the Access to Information Act.
* **Voting Record:** Councillor Wyness and McLean voted yes on key confidential motions; Councillor Johnston voted no on two of them.
Now, on the development front, our real-time monitors show 15 new commercial/construction permits were issued in Calgary this week. That's a steady hum, meaning the city isn't hitting a dry well when it comes to new builds, even if the council debates are a bit more... capped, if you catch my drift. It’ll be interesting to see if these confidential discussions lead to any public policy shifts down the line, especially with all that development still chugging along.
