The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Calgary, what's City Hall hiding from you about those park properties?

Your City Hall crew is keeping things quiet

Alright, Calgary, let's talk about what's happening behind the closed doors at City Hall, because it feels like there's been some serious capping of information lately. For real though, the recent Strategic Meeting of Council on March 10th saw a couple of votes that really make you wonder what's being kept under wraps.

The big one? Councillor Jennifer Wyness and Councillor Dan McLean both voted 'Yes' on a motion to adopt Report C2026-0240, specifically directing that "Confidential Attachment 2 be held confidential." Councillor Landon Johnston, on the other hand, voted 'No' on that same motion, and also 'No' on a motion to keep *all* "Closed Meeting discussions" confidential, citing Section 29 (Advice from officials) of the Access to Information Act.

This isn't just bureaucratic jargon. When council goes into a closed meeting, and then votes to keep certain attachments or discussions confidential, it means the public doesn't get to see what's being decided. We're talking about things that could impact everything from our property assessments — like the $56 million average for Canada Olympic Park properties, or the $40 million average for Nose Hill Park land, according to property assessment highlights — right down to the commercial developments popping up. We've seen 15 commercial/new construction permits issued this week, per the Civic Intelligence Monitor data. We need to know what conversations are being held back.

We need to keep an eye on how these confidential decisions might shape our city, especially with so much development on the go.
