Here's what your council got done this week
It was a pretty quiet week down at City Hall, honestly. Sometimes these Community and Public Services Committee meetings just hum along, all business and not much in the way of fireworks. They adopted the agenda, went in private for a bit — which always makes you wonder what’s being discussed under Section 20 of the *Access to Information Act* – and then emerged to approve some new blood for a couple of important city boards.
Specifically, the Edmonton Public Library Board got its recommended shortlist approved, and the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission had its shortlist revised after that private session. Both motions passed 4 to 0, with E. Rutherford, J. Wright, K. Principe, and J. Morgan all voting yes. It's good to see engagement with these civic institutions. The library, in particular, is one of those places that genuinely makes this city feel like a community, from Mill Woods to the inner city.
### What’s that trip to Calgary all about?
On the expense side, we saw some council members clocking in for the 2025 Alberta Municipalities Convention in Calgary. Councillor Clarke and Councillor Elliott both expensed $825.88 for accommodation and Councillor Clarke an additional $685.00 for registration. Councillor Elliott also tacked on $348.00 for food and incidentals. Conferences are part of the gig, sure, but it's always worth noting where those dollars go.
Honestly though, when you compare the cost of a few days in Calgary to the sheer volume of 311 requests the city handles — 160,623 for general information alone, and 43,660 for snow and ice maintenance, which, let's be real, is just a standard Tuesday here — it puts things in perspective. Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
