The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. LA's got nearly 16,000 trash calls. What's your 311 for?

Oye, your trash is literally our biggest problem

Okay so check it—you know how sometimes you call 311 for something small, like a pothole that's gonna eat your tire whole, or a street light that's been out since forever? Well, the latest data from the city's 311 service requests is kinda wild, no mames. Like, the top two issues people are calling about? It's all about trash, fam.

**What Angelenos Are Actually Asking For**

We're talking almost 9,000 requests for "Item Pickups" and then another 7,102 for "Illegal Dumping Item Pickups." That's like, just under 16,000 calls for *just trash* in this last reporting period. And it’s not just big stuff, you know? It's everything from your neighbor's old couch they left on the curb on Sunset, right by the taco truck, to literally piles of stuff dumped in alleys. Then, way down the list, you finally see "Homeless Encampment" requests at 1,728. It really makes you wonder, like, what are we really prioritizing here?

It's clear that Angelenos are frustrated with what they're seeing on our streets. This isn't just about making things look pretty; it's about public health, it's about safety, and it's about respecting our neighborhoods. The city needs to show us a real plan for tackling this, especially as we head into summer and things just sit out there baking.

That's the real LA, fam — east of the 110.
