The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Your city hall just approved an arcade on Johnson Street

Your city hall finally lets you play arcade games

Good morning from the island — we're still here, the orcas were spotted at Active Pass, and honestly, life is fine.

Well, here's the thing about our city hall sometimes: they make decisions that truly, profoundly affect our daily lives, and then other times, they approve something that just makes you smile. What exactly do I mean? We’re talking about new business licenses in the city. The numbers, you see, tell a story.

*Arcadia* is now officially licensed as an amusement centre at 707 Johnson Street. Licence number 48095. An *amusement centre*. Doesn't that just feel... hopeful? For those of us who remember the quiet hum of an arcade, or even just a good pinball machine, this is a welcome addition to downtown Victoria. It’s a bit of a shift from the usual professional services or mobile vendors.

Speaking of mobile vendors, Hazel's Ice Cream Ltd. has two new bicycle vendor licenses (40784 and 40447). More ice cream on two wheels? Yes, please. This is Victoria, after all, and a good treat on a sunny day near Beacon Hill Park is practically a civic duty.

What does this mean for us? It means a little more joy, perhaps. More places to gather, more chances for a sweet treat as you wander James Bay. It means our city is still open for a bit of fun, even amidst the serious business of basement suite wiring (Permit #EP083395 for $8,200, should you be curious).
