The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Someone just called 311 five times about *one* pothole

Your morning coffee just got a jolt, hey

Winterpeg. We built a city in the coldest place anyone has any business building a city — and it is genuinely wonderful. Good morning.

We've got some live intel this morning, so let's get right to it, hey. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was busy overnight. WFPS dispatch records show a structure fire was reported in Daniel McIntyre at 4:33 AM on March 22, 2026. This was incident 2026042317, with units D3, E101, E103, L1, and R4 on scene. They had it resolved by 4:50 AM, according to the real-time monitor data. Always good to hear those quick response times, especially in the Daniel McIntyre ward. It’s a dense neighbourhood, a lot of older homes there, you know.

### Potholes are Back

And speaking of things that are *definitely* back in full force, the number one complaint to the city’s 311 service today is "Pothole P1_vof." We've seen 5 calls about this specific pothole type in the last 24 hours, out of 14 total 311 calls. It's that time of year, hey, when the freeze-thaw cycle really does a number on our streets. Keep an eye out on your regular routes, especially around Portage and Main, because those potholes can sneak up on you faster than a spring blizzard.

### New Spots and City Contracts

On a brighter note for the city’s economy, three new liquor license applications were posted this week. We’re looking at BarBurrito Fresh Mexican Grill, Venetian Nail Spa, and The Pembina Pint and Restaurant. Always good to see new businesses setting up shop here, bringing more options to the neighbourhoods.

Also, the city awarded a new contract for 24/7 mobile outreach services on March 20, 2026. This is huge for our most vulnerable neighbours, especially as the weather starts to do its springtime thing, which can be just as rough as winter sometimes. It shows the city is really trying to step up where it counts. We'll be watching to see how these new services roll out and what kind of impact they have on the streets.
