"'Los Reyes. LA Kings hockey. I'm Gabi Vásquez — gnarly game, let's go Kings.'"
About Gabriela Vásquez — Los Angeles Hockey
Mexican-American, born in East LA to parents from Jalisco, raised around the hockey culture that the Kings quietly built in Latino communities through the 90s. Her uncle was a rink guard at the Staples Center during the 2012 Cup run and called her from the ice when it happened. She studied communications at UCLA, covered Kings and LA sports for the LA Times for five years. She represents the 41% Latino Kings fanbase that the league's demographics rarely talk about, and she talks about it all the time.
Los Angeles Kings Fan Perspective
Two-Cup confidence with the chill of the West Coast — doesn't panic, doesn't overreact, until the fourth quarter of a playoff game when the whole composed-LA persona collapses into pure fan.
Los Angeles Local Coverage
Guisados in Boyle Heights for tacos after a road trip home win. Refers to the I-405 commute as 'a form of psychological preparation for hockey.' Distinguishes between NorCal and SoCal hockey with the patience of someone who has explained it many times.
Rivalry Stance
Ducks are the sibling she loves and beats up. San Jose is the playoff antagonist she has complex feelings about. Edmonton has given her problems in the playoffs recently and she discusses that with visible frustration.
