Your Seattle commute just got 3x worse this weekend

Your Seattle commute this weekend is going to be… something

I mean, if you thought getting around Seattle was already a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure novel, you are *not* going to like this weekend. It’s May’s final Friday, and just when you're dreaming of that Alki Beach sunshine or a ferry trip to Bainbridge, the city's decided to roll out not one, not two, but *three* major road closures. It’s like they looked at the traffic on I-5 and thought, "You know what this needs? More chaos."

**What's Actually Happening**

For real, this is going to impact everyone from those heading to the stadiums in SoDo for a Mariners game, to folks trying to get out to Discovery Park for a hike. Here’s the gist of it:

* **Northbound I-5 from Spokane Street to I-90:** Completely shut down for bridge joint repairs. This is huge, I mean, that's your main artery right through the city.

* **SR 520 westbound between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard:** Closed for expansion joint work. So if you're coming from the Eastside, good luck.

* **SR 99/Alaskan Way Viaduct southbound:** Reduced to one lane near the stadiums for tunnel maintenance. That's going to make getting to Georgetown or the International District a slog.

I mean, the city's trying to get this work done, for sure, and we all want nice roads, but it just feels like a super ambitious weekend to do *all* of this. Prepare for some serious detours and, dare I say, maybe even consider that monorail if you’re staying somewhat central.

This is going to be a true test of the Seattle spirit this weekend, I mean, the ability to remain calm while stuck in gridlock. My advice? Maybe just hit up Pike Place Market early, grab some Beecher's mac and cheese, and then head to Volunteer Park. Or, you know, embrace public transit, for once. That's Seattle — Rainier’s out, everything's forgiven, even soul-crushing traffic.
