That El Niño forecast for Sudbury? You won't believe it.

SHARE

You’re not gonna believe this El Niño forecast for us, eh?

Bonjour du Nord — c'est Sudbury, on lâche pas. Let's go.

Okay, so everyone's buzzing about this El Niño weather watch, and the idea of a "super El Niño" coming our way. Down South, maybe they’re just thinking about slightly warmer winters or a bit less rain for their patio season. Ben là, up here in Sudbury? We’re still digging ourselves out from a "possibly record-breaking" snowfall that just collapsed two sports domes and left folks on Energy Court in the cold. You think about how much snow we just got — 42 centimetres in one dump, eh — and how hard it was to clear it from the Junction Creek trail, let alone all the residential streets that look like a crater lake road map, and you realize how different El Niño weather hits us.

For us, a major weather event, whether it’s a super-cold snap or a crazy amount of snow, isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s a full-on operational challenge for the city, for businesses struggling to reopen downtown, for people just trying to get out of their driveways in Copper Cliff. We saw what a "record-breaking" snowfall can do to infrastructure and our most vulnerable. Voyons donc, the idea of El Niño bringing unpredictable extremes here just makes you grit your teeth. We’re used to tough winters, sure, but the climate is changing, and the North feels it first, eh? We’ve proven we can re-green a landscape, but we can’t stop the weather. We can only prepare.

This isn’t just about comfort; it's about survival, access to services, and the cost of keeping this city running. The North already gets ignored when it comes to federal funding for things like our highways, even with fatalities mounting. You think they’re gonna suddenly care about how El Niño impacts Sudbury’s snow removal budget? We’re always fighting for attention, for resources, and these big weather patterns just highlight how much we need to be ready, ourselves.
