What your council hid from us this week
Alright, Calgary, let's talk about what went down at City Hall this week, and honestly, it’s got me feeling like we hit a dry well on transparency. On March 10th, your City Council held a Strategic Meeting, and not one, not two, but *three* motions passed to move into closed session and keep discussions confidential. Seriously? Councillor Landon Johnston was the lone "no" vote on two of those confidentiality motions, so good on him for trying to open things up a bit. For real though, when the agenda itself gets amended to insert "Revised Confidential" before items, it makes you wonder what’s so secret.
On the property assessment side, it's always interesting to see where the big bucks are. Canada Olympic Park properties are sitting at an average assessed value of over $56 million, and Nose Hill Park isn't far behind at $40 million. It’s a good reminder of the sheer scale of public lands our city manages, but also how much wealth is tied up in those spaces. But with all these confidential meetings, it makes me think we need to keep a closer eye on what's happening behind those closed doors. What's next for these big land parcels, and will we even know about it?
