Your new rifles highlight a PEI problem.

Your new rifle order hits *different* for us in Charlottetown

Good morning from the Atlantic — three provinces, five communities, and the stories that cross every border.

So, Ottawa's fast-tracking this $307 million initial order with Colt Canada for new army rifles, aiming to deliver over 65,000 to Canadian troops. Now look, that's a lot of firepower, and good for our troops, b'y, but when I hear "millions in federal loans for defence projects," my mind, and likely the minds of many in Charlottetown, immediately goes to Newfoundland and Labrador. Why, you ask? Because just this week, five Newfoundland and Labrador companies are getting a share of $16 million in federal loans for defence projects. It’s a good thing, don’t get me wrong, but it highlights a persistent pattern: defence spending, especially when it’s big ticket, often feels like it’s flowing to other parts of Atlantic Canada, while we're left here in Charlottetown wondering where our piece of the pie is, or if there's even a pie for us. We're not a postcard, we're a region with real problems and real solutions, and sometimes those solutions come in the form of investment.

It's not that we don't understand the need for national defence, but when you see a province like Newfoundland getting direct investment in this sector, and we're just down the road here on PEI, it just makes you think. We've got our own challenges, you know, like the ongoing issues with the Jean Canfield Building and its recent electrical transformer fire affecting Veterans Affairs and Service Canada offices, or the constant battle to secure adequate health care funding for things like cataract clinic surgeries. It's about ensuring all communities, even those as small as Charlottetown, get a fair shake when it comes to federal investment that goes beyond tourism and potatoes. We’ve got smart, innovative people here too, and we’re ready to contribute.
