You won't believe this deficit, right?
Good morning from the Fundy shore — the tide's turning, and so is New Brunswick. Let's get into it.
I'll tell you what, you know how everyone's always grumbling about the price of gas and groceries down King Street, right? And then you see the provincial budget come out, and they're talking about a historic $1.4 billion deficit. A *billion* and a half, nearly. And they're gonna shrink the civil service by 12 percent over three years to try and rein it in. Now, I know the province needs to balance the books, but when you're talking about those kinds of numbers, it just feels… well, it feels like the kind of weather we get in February, you know? You just hunker down and hope for spring. It's not just a number on a page; it's gonna hit folks from the Quispamsis side of the harbour all the way up to Fredericton and beyond.
The big question, right, is what that means for us here. We've got folks working hard every day, whether they're down at the Port or up in the uptown shops, trying to make a go of it. And then you hear about a deficit like that, and you just wonder where the money went, right? It always seems to come back to the pocketbook, doesn't it? And seeing that kind of red ink, it makes you think about all the things that need doing, like fixing up those old buildings around the City Market or making sure our roads don't look like they've been through a nor'easter every winter. It's a tough pill to swallow, I'll tell you that.
