Your ancient Roman burial is giving me the shivers, right?
Good morning from the Fundy shore — the tide's turning, and so is New Brunswick. Let's get into it.
I'll tell you what, you think you've heard it all, and then you get a dispatch from a Roman necropolis, right there in Ostiense. Archaeologists dug up three skeletons, and each one of them had iron nails driven through their chests. Not just like, *around* them, but *through* them. The thinking is it was some kind of ritual to keep the spirits from getting restless. Can you imagine? Trying to keep the dead quiet with a bit of ironwork. We've got our own old burying ground up by King Street, across from the Loyalist House, and you hear a few yarns about restless spirits there, especially 'round Hallowe'en. But I'll tell you, nobody's ever gone sticking nails in anyone's chest to calm 'em down. We just tell 'em to cross the harbour on the ferry, right? That usually calms anyone down.
It makes you wonder, doesn't it? What kind of fear drove folks to do something like that? We got our own ways of dealing with the unknown here on the Fundy, but it’s usually with a good cup of coffee and a steady gaze out at the bay. And maybe a quick prayer, if the fog rolls in too thick.
That's your Wildcard for today, eh? Have a good one. Caleb Duguay-Firth, MiTL Sports Desk, Saint John.
